Sylvia

Votes for Women and a fractured family at a momentous hour in British history.

100 years after the first women in Britain were granted the vote, Kate Prince combines dance, hip hop, soul and funk to shed new light on a remarkable story at the heart of the Suffragette movement.

Co-written by Kate Prince and Priya Parmar with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, Sylvia is a modern musical celebrating the life of Sylvia Pankhurst, her pivotal role in the campaign for women’s rights and the price of the passion and politics that tore her family apart.

Sylvia is co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, with support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and from the Department for Culture Media and Sport.

An Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells and ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company production, co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW.

  • Fast paced hip show

I went along to see Sylvia without a clear image of how it would be portrayed. It is a very unusual way of telling the panckhurst story but very powerful and entertaining. All actors were amazing with fabulous voices. The pace of the show was incredible and certain scenes v moving. Especially the one portraying the violence shown towards the suffragettes. I hope the show continues onto a longer run.

I really enjoyed the energy of the performance. I thought the singing was beautiful. The casting was well thought out. I heard about the production on the One Show and booked immediately and am so glad I did. It was also wonderful to see so many young people in the audience who obviously loved the show. I am so glad I went

It started slowly and gradually got going & got better. Loved the voices & different genres of music & singing. Beverley knights voice blew me away. The show had to be halted twice for technical issues but it didn’t faze the cast they just picked up where they left off smoothly. Learnt lots historically & I do feel that the show could be edited down as it was too long. Would definitely recommend to others. Great show.& cast.
