The Life I Lead

Best remembered for playing Mr Banks in Disney's classic film Mary Poppins, David Tomlinson was renowned for playing the classic English gent, forthright, proper, and a loveable fool. His meeting with Walt Disney came to encapsulate his incredible life full of adventure and heartbreak.

The man who portrayed one of cinema's most famous patriarchs was defined by his relationship with his own father - a remote eccentric, who was hiding an extraordinary tragicomic secret.

THE LIFE I LEAD sees Miles Jupp, one of Britain's leading comics and actors (Mock the Week, The News Quiz, Rev, The Durrells) bring David Tomlinson's remarkable story to life.

A richly comic and moving tale of fathers and sons across the generations, THE LIFE I LEAD fills in the blanks behind a very well-known face.

'Perfect comic timing.'

  • Excellent!

    22 September 2019

Miles Jupp was superb, not an impression of the man but a performance that captured the essence of David Tomlinson's on screen persona. Informative, heart wrenching but overwhelmingly warm and hilarious! Thoroughly recommended.

Incredible performance by Jupp. One of the best solo performances in the theatre I've seen.

  • The Best Ever!

    22 September 2019

I was slightly anxious about watching a one man performance. I shouldn't have been. Miles Jupp gave what was proba ly the very best performance that I have EVER had the honour to watch. The range of emotions he brought out in the audience covered the entire spectrum - laughter, nostalgia, sadness and shock. What a tribute to the Tomlinson family. I cannot imagine what could have been done to improve it - absolutely nothing. The final thing to he amazed at was that at the end of the performance Moles Jupp announced that Audrey Tomlinson was in the audience! What an honour! Just brilliant. Thank you.
