Brodsky/Baryshnikov

Bird&Carrot presents:

Brodsky / Baryshnikov (UK Premiere)

Based on the poems of Joseph Brodsky

Directed by Alvis Hermanis

Performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov

May 3-7, 2017| Apollo Theatre

Brodsky / Baryshnikov is a one-man show based on the poems of Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky, performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov. Conceived and directed by Alvis Hermanis, noted Latvian director of The New Riga Theatre, Brodsky / Baryshnikov is an emotional journey deep into the poet's visceral and complex compositions. Performed in Russian, Brodsky's mother tongue, Baryshnikov recites a selection of his long-time friend’s poignant and eloquent works. His subtle physicality transports the audience into Hermanis' reverent imagining of Brodsky's interior world.

  • Brilliant

We were amazed at how such a deep effect can be achieved with such simple means of presentation. Everything was very carefully measured yet very impressive. The poems were read beautifully and the surtitles were tastefully subtle and didn't distract either of us (a native and a non-native speaker).

  • A legendary dancer's tribute to his friend

    4 May 2017

The show, aimed at the marginal western audience of Russian-speakers, will in no way enhance Baryshnikov's artistic reputation - not that his illustrious career needs any further enhancement. For him, it is a labour of love, a tribute to his late friend, the Nobel Prize Laureaute, poet Joseph Brodsky. When Baryshnikov came to New York in 1974, Brodsky took him under his wing. The two men, both from Leningrad, knew of each other before and admired each other. The rumour has it that Brodsky favoured Baryshnikov's reading of his poetry over many. In the show, Baryshnikov does just that - reads his friend's poems, just as one would for own enjoyment. The show as a work of dramatic art is far from perfect, often throughout it you wish for something unexpected to happen, a dance move, an act of passion or Baryshnikov's personal engagement with the audience. But as a tribute to a late friend, from one great artist to another, it is significat and moving. I wish there was a programme available to take home, to commemorate the event.
