Inspired by a true story, Peter Shaffer’s gripping psychological thriller, EQUUS, explores the complex relationships between devotion, myth and sexuality.
When teenager Alan Strang’s pathological fascination leads him to blind six horses in a Hampshire stable, psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart is tasked with uncovering the motive behind the boy’s violent act. As Dysart delves into Alan’s world of twisted spirituality, passion and sexuality, he begins to question his own sanity and motivations in a world driven by consumerism.
Award winning director Ned Bennett brings Peter Shaffer’s psychological thriller Equus to the stage in a bold new production of the critically-acclaimed classic.

An extraordinary performance of an extraordinary well-known work. So well crafted. The Fluid Movement of actors as horses was mesmerising and highly skilled.

Equus is a tough show to stage but was a strong production.
22 March 2019
Equus is a magical script and the story will have you enraptured even though this production didn't go as deep as previous iterations I've seen. The lead character while a terrific actor was not believable as a 17 year old character (he looks like he in his 30ies) and fails to capture the real layered evolution of Alan's character. Woman playing Jill was terrific as was the entire supporting cast. The character of Martin Dysart was a solid but not entirely memorable performance of a truly rich role.

Why the smoking?
21 March 2019
Too much smoking in the play. Why? Aren’t there stage cigarettes that can be used? I had to leave there was just too much smoke from the constant cigarette smoking.

Thought-provoking play, particularly impressed by the stunning display of the male actors portraying horses, their physical movements were just incredible. Really glad to have caught this play before it left Stratford.
