A lost watch, a missing brooch, a displaced picture frame… Tricks of the mind perhaps, but for Bella Manningham everything seems horribly real. As the fog-bound evening draws in and the gaslight dims again, Bella realizes she is alone with no one to protect her from the footsteps creaking in the attic.
Only the unexpected arrival of former police detective Rough can help untangle fact from fiction and save a woman on the brink of insanity.
Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight was first staged in 1938, and in 1944 was adapted as a film starring legendary Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten and Charles Boyer.
One of the UK’s best-loved actors, MARTIN SHAW leads a star-studded cast. Best known for his TV roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals, he returns to the stage after recent West End triumphs including An Ideal Husband, Twelve Angry Men, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and A Man for All Seasons.

Dramatic
30 September 2019
I’d heard the term gaslighting but never before seen the play or film so had to come! Wasn’t sure what to expect.... the start was less of a slow ‘burner’, the second half w unexpected but delightful and entertaining comedic and dramatic moments. I did think Mr Shaw’s accent was a little peculiar. Was the caught in spot lit moment close to the end a foreboding of the future?!

Very engaging
28 September 2019
From the very start you feel her torment and question her sanity under the controlling wiles of a husband with a determined ulterior motive. With the entrance of the Police Inspector the tension is relieved and the atmosphere is lightened although he remains earnest in his intentions to finally solve a crime that has haunted him throughout his career. Strong, excellent and engaging performances by all. Having seen Martin Shaw on stage many times this is yet another fine performance that makes for an entirely entertaining evening. I wish them every success in the West End run.
