My Fair Lady

The Lincoln Center Theater’s critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning production of My Fair Lady comes to London in Summer 2022, the first major West End revival of Lerner & Loewe’s much-loved musical for 21 years.

This 16-week engagement at the London Coliseum is a truly loverly way to celebrate London’s theatre scene back in bloom!

Starring Stephen K Amos who will play Alfred P. Doolittle and Malcolm Sinclair who will play Colonel Pickering. They both join Amara Okereke as Eliza Doolittle, Harry Hadden-Paton as Henry Higgins, Vanessa Redgrave as Mrs Higgins, Maureen Beattie as Mrs Pearce and Sharif Afifi as Freddy Eynsford Ord-Hill.

My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady”. But who is really being transformed?

Directed by Bartlett Sher, this sublime production will feature the English National Opera orchestra playing Frederick Loewe’s ravishing score and a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. My Fair Lady boasts a score including the classic songs I Could Have Danced All Night, Get Me to the Church on Time, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, On the Street Where You Live, The Rain in Spain, and I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.

We were so looking forward to this and whilst the cast were brilliant we were disappointed in the modernisation of the story. MFL is a period piece warts and all and rewriting it to satisfy modern views destroys some of the essential empathy between the characters. The second half was unexpected and led to a sad rather than a happy ending. Audio was poor such that some of the lovely and funny dialogue was lost.

A wonderful achievement. I cannot fault anything about the production. I look forward to it's debut at The Alhambra in Bradford in September.

Thankful that I didn't pay full price as I was slightly underwhelmed by the show. Lead actress who played Eliza was great but some of the supporting cast were a little poor - especially actor who played her father. Would give it 3.5 stars if I could.
